What is Quality? – Different Perspectives

Quality

The level of quality varies from person to person. Some people think that quality means high price (eg:- people think that Ferrari cars are very high quality). Some people think that quality means durability. For this reason, a precise definition of quality cannot be given in practice. But according to a study by Mihaela Kelemen regarding this quality, we can focus on several grant components. They are,

Four Managerial Perspectives on Quality

People think that quality is determined by technical, operational and managerial factors.

  • The Product based Approach

This means that the quality of the materials used for that product determines the quality of the product.

Example: - The quality of ice cream is determined by the quality of milk.

  • The Manufacturing based Approach

The quality of the product is determined by the method by which the product is manufactured. That is, the quality is determined by the technology used for production.

Example: - Products manufactured with Japanese technology are of high quality.

  • The Value based Approach

The quality of the product is determined by the reasonable price at which the product can be purchased.

  • The User based Approach

Quality is determined because the product contains the requirements and specifications expected by customers.

Four Critical Perspectives on Quality

People see quality as very social, very cultural and very political. People think it’s not very technical or operational it should be very cultural or social or political.

  • The Transcendental Approach

This quality is based on people's experiences and feelings. We cannot say what quality is like because it depends on feeling. Therefore, without using a product for a long time, it is not possible to say for sure about the quality of that product. For example, the Apple mobile phone becomes a quality phone in society but without using it, we cannot say for sure about the quality of the phone.

  • The Social Constructivist Approach

The influence of another person determines the quality of the product. For example, when a famous celebrity claims to have used a certain cream, people think it's a quality product.

  • The Discursive Approach

If the quality of the product is mentioned, people believe that it is a quality product.

  • The Slogan Approach

Determining the quality of a product based on the slogan used to sell it.
