Maslow’s Hierarchy of Needs Theories
Maslow’s basic proposition is that people are beings with wants and want they want depends on what they already have. Maslow suggests that people are motivated to fulfill basic needs before moving on to other, more advanced needs. There are five different stages of needs. People fulfill their needs from the lowest stage to the highest stage. It can be shown as follows,
The basic physiological needs are food, water, breathing, and clothing. These needs are essential to survival. A salary is a form of payment that can maintain the employer's standard of living. Employers will be motivated to continue that employment. This need is a common need of any human being. It is because a man cannot live without this need. Therefore, this must be fulfilled before Maslow's other needs are fulfilled.
People need safety and security. Some of the basic safety needs include,
1. Confirmation in their job.
2. Waiting for a positioning scheme.
3. Making their position permanent.
4. Right to live in safety.
5. The right to travel in safety and the right to believe in a religion of one's choice in safety.
In the workplace, Maslow’s hierarchy includes love and affection. Put them to work in groups, provide them with opportunities for group entertainment and allow them to move with groups, in which they can find affection. In normal life, love and care are essential from a small child to an elderly person. Where there is no such thing as love, there may be conflicts between different people and these conflicts may develop into a world war. Therefore, love is another important aspect of Maslow's hierarchy.
Maslow’s theory, people next seek esteem, respect, appreciation, recognition, popularity, and status. An employee can be motivated by providing positional status and giving awards etc. Every human being in the world wants to live with dignity. It is common to any group of people or any country. Respect can be given in various ways. This is a very well accepted fact in Japan.
- Self - Actualization Need
Self – actualization needs simply the need for growth and interest in fulfilling their potential. It also uses abilities most creatively. According to the theory, a manager can motivate his employees by identifying their needs and providing opportunities to satisfy them.
Let's see Maslow's basic needs in practice
For instance, Maslow’s theory, which proposes that humans follow a needs path from physiological needs to needs of safety, love and belonging, esteem and self-actualization, is a typically American business point of view. Greece and Mexico, countries businesses with cultures that expression for an important set of directions and guidelines in their lives, might have safety at the top of their pyramids, while Scandinavian country's businesses, well known for their cultivation characteristics, might have social needs at the top of theirs.
for example in countries like the USA kids after certain age leave their home and parents do not have to be concerned about their kid's future and children also do not have to worry about their parents whereas in countries like Sri Lanka where joint family culture is prevalent kids and parents both have to think about each other when they are fulfilling their needs.
In the present, the main reason for the war conflict between different countries and the war conflict between different religions is that Maslow's basic needs cannot be met. If every human in today's world can fulfill these basic needs then that person can live happily. But in today's world, very few people have been able to meet these basic needs in the workplace and normal life.
As a world, we should be sad that Maslow's Hierarchy of Needs theory, which was introduced in 1943, cannot be fulfilled even in the current year of 2022.
